It is a beautiful sunny day as we spend our last day in Krackow. We booked a 2 pm walking tour and had a lazy morning.

On our way to Old Town or Main Market, we leisurely strolled through part of the Planty, the park that surrounds Old Town. We enjoyed watching the local Krakow citizens enjoying a late summer day. Bikers, families walking with children and dogs were all out enjoying the sunshine. We also enjoyed looking at the wonderful architecture – beautiful churches, row houses, banks and other official buildings which were spared the World War II destruction experienced by Warsaw.

While there is evidence of Krakow being inhabited in the 4th century, the first recorded history of Krakow was in 966. Poland has been conquered, occupied and ruled by many countries. It was the capital of Poland until 1596 when it moved to Warsaw creating a rivalry that still exists today.

We began our afternoon tour by the Florian gate and the Barbican which was built around 1498. The Barbican was part of the city defense. It has a brick column, a moat and 9 foot thick walls connected to the city walls. The tour ended at Wawel castle and Wawel Cathedral.

The castle was the residence of Polish kings and conquerors and the Cathedral was said too be the church of the kings. Each reigning monarch or ruler left their mark on both resulting in a variety of architectural styles as additions to the were made.

Jagiellonian University was another stop on the tour. It was the second university in Central Europe. Two of its students were Copernicus and St. John Paul II. The students are on break until October and it seemed like a quiet oasis in a busy city.

Market Square

Main Market Square, dating from the 13th century, was another place of interest on our tour. It is boarded by some beautiful buildings. The Town Hall Tower is all that is left from the 14th century town hall. For 800 years a church has stood exactly where  St. Mary’s Church, the church of the people, is located on the square. It is a beautiful  church and is said to be in competition with Wawel Castle Cathedral. Adjacent to St.Mary’s Church is is the municipal  watchtower. Every hour of the day after the clock chimes a bugler plays the bejinal song. He also plays for special events and as in days of old to worn of danger.

Another landmark on Main Market Square is the Cloth Hall dating to the mid 15th century. It was originally the market for selling cloth. It is a beautiful Italian Renaissance style building that now sells souvenirs on the ground floor and houses an art museum on the second floor. Krackow is a beautiful city with much to see and do.

Following our tour, we had a traditional Polish dinner at an outdoor restaurant on the square. It was a perfect evening for eating outside. Then we walked back to our lodging to prepare for our travels to Prague tomorrow. Poland has been a wonderful experience and we recommend that you include it in your European travels.
