Today we set out on our second pilgrimage we always make when in San Diego – this one to Stone Brewery in Escondido, CA (about 30 miles north of San DIego). As you all know, we are fond of visiting any place that makes alcohol – breweries, wineries, distilleries, whatever. Over the years, we have visited any number of these places to sample their wares, and possibly our very favorite is Stone Brewery.
I first learned about Stone Brewery when I ran across a bottle of beer called “Arrogant Bastard Ale” in a local beer and wine shop at home several years ago. After reading the name and the inscription on the back, I had to try it. It’s really good stuff. I won’t try to describe what was said about it on the bottle – you will just have to read it for yourself.
Anyway, off to Stone we went, and a wonderful time we had. They have a delightful beer garden and restaurant and the food is great (and so is the beer). They always have something new and this time they had a black IPA which appears to be a marriage between a stout and an IPA. Truly unique and very tasty. Lots of hops and black barley malt.
If you are ever visiting in San DIego I heartily recommend a side trip to Stone Brewery – even if you are not a beer lover. But don’t go on the weekend. You’ll not get near the place.
