Day 31: Eagle Point, VIC, Australia

It was a lazy and beautiful day at Eagle Point. It’s so nice here that we decided to stay another night. The campground is extremely neat and clean with modern facilities. It’s also right on the shore of the lake which is about 100 yards from our campsite. After a leisurely breakfast, we drove into Bairnsdale to pick up some supplies – one being a blanket to supplement our sleeping bags as the nights here are very cold. The internet connection at our campground was out of order, so while we were in town, we stopped at McDonalds to use their wifi to email folks, pay bills and catch up on the news.

After taking care of administrative matters, we drove down to Paynesville to catch the ferry to Raymond Island – a small island that is a nature preserve in Lake King just a short ride from the town. It is known to have a large koala population. We chose to leave the car in Paynesville and walk around the island rather than drive. (Pedestrian passengers ride the ferry free.) In the course of a short 1 ½ km walk we spotted about 7 or 8 koalas sleeping up in the trees. Every now and then one would open his (her) eyes and stretch, but that was about all the activity we could get out of them. They are so adorable. I had left my camera in the car and couldn’t take photos, but Peggy managed to get some photos with her cell phone. Unfortunately, we can’t download the photos from her cell phone because we can’t use it with the phone service here in Australia. I will try to post some of the koala photos after we return to the states.

For dinner, we purchased some fresh lamb chops (my mother’s very favorite). I was amazed at the price which was A$10 per kg, about half the price of lamb chops in the states. Together with veggies and a great cabernet-merlot wine, and fruit dessert, it made a great meal. Altogether, it was a perfect end to a perfect day.

Cheers,
Wayne & Peggy
