Day 33, Aug 19: Klamath Falls to Corvallis, OR & Crater Lake

On our way to Corvallis, we detoured to Crater Lake. All we could say when we first viewed it was Wow! Crater Lake is spectacular. It is the deepest lake in the U.S. at 1,946 feet and the 9th deepest lake in the world. It is a formed within the caldera of a volcano that erupted only 6 to 8 thousand years ago, and in the middle is a small island, Wizard Island, that is essentially a volcano within a volcano. The lake is magnificent with the deepest blue color imaginable and the tree lined walls of Crater Lake are beautifully reflected in the water.

After leaving Crater Lake we continued on our way to our our weekend home for viewing the eclipse on Monday. It is a temporary campground set up at Adair Park just for the eclipse. The Benton County Park Authority had been concerned about illegal camping in the park and chose to make it legal, set up the necessary facilities and charge a fee to cover costs so they could control it. As there hadn’t been rain for several weeks, the grass and trees were very dry and the risk of fire was extremely high, it was a very wise decision. (All around Oregon and northern California there were many forest fires still burning and the smoke had been very thick in many places along our route.)

The park has picnic area with covered shelters, tables, BBQ pits, kitchen sinks; hiking trails; playground and a frisbee (disc) golf course. The 3 bathrooms were supplemented with portable chemical toilets and a washing station. The open fields provided an excellent site for eclipse viewing and the weatherman promised us the best possible viewing conditions. After setting up our campsite we explored the area, had dinner, read our book and tucked in for the night.
