While at Bright, a number of people talked about Ned Kelly, a notorious outlaw equated to our Jesse James, and recommended that we go visit Beechworth, the town where Ned Kelly was held until his trial for killing policemen and the shoot out in Glenrowan where Ned was captured (sort of like Tombstone, AZ). We were also advised to go up to Buffalo Mountain which is on the way to Beechworth, so obviously, we had to do that too. As it turned out, the road was another windy mountain road that took us up about 1500 meters from the base to a point not quite at the top. It was another road where Peggy kept her eyes shut, especially coming down when we were on the cliff side. There is 1.5 km trail leading from the parking area to the “Horn” which is the highest point on the mountain, about 1750 meters. It was a steep climb, but well maintained; and when we got to the top, there was a 360 degree view that looked over the countryside for miles. The view was spectacular. Much of the land had been scorched by wildfires and much of it was barren of any vegetation and looked like a great setting for Mordor.
After leaving Buffalo Mountain, we worked our way north to Beechworth and found a lovely campground just outside the town. We checked in, set up our tent while we still had some daylight, and went grocery shopping in the town. (Australia recently went back to standard time from daylight saving time, so it starts getting dark real early. As I am writing this at 6 PM it is totally dark.) At the local store, we bought some veggies and a steak for dinner. Then we returned to our campground, had dinner, read our story and turned in for the night.
