We slept in this morning and had a lazy start to our day. We headed back to Stephanplatz to verify that the J&L Lobmeyr Crystal shop with the glass museum will be open tomorrow. It still has the original facade decor from 1823. Next was a late breakfast at an outdoor cafe before heading to an organ concert at St. Peter’s Church. It was truly wonderful.
Next we went to the Habsburg Palace where Emperors and Empresses lived from the 13th century to the early 20th century. It is a sprawling complex of buildings where 5,000 people live and work.
In front of the palace are archeological ruins dating back to the Roman occupation. Under the remains of previous constructions there are structural remains of the canabae legionis, the settlement outside the Roman legionary fortress Vindobona which was probably destroyed between 168 and 180.
The palace is the official home and work place of the president. It also has some amazing statues and collections of jewelry and musical instruments. We toured the Silver and Porcelain Collection, the Kaiser (or Imperial) Apartments and the Sisi Museum. The staircase, rooms and decor were fascinating. The public and private rooms were decorated according to the period when Emperor Franz Joseph and Empress Elizabeth (Sisi) resided there. Unfortunately, no pictures were permitted.

The beauty of the silver and porcelain at first was very impressive. The hand painted porcelain was reminiscent of the china that Wayne’s grandmother painted. Room after room (at least 7) was filled with silver, gold and copper serving dishes, plates, cooking equipment, linen and crystal. The opulence was a little overwhelming. Surprisingly, there were not duplicates for the summer home or royal yacht. All the cooking and serving supplies were packed and taken when the family moved to the summer home or were traveling on the royal yacht.
It was a demanding public life for both the emperor and empress. Empress Sisi was more of a private person but needed to honor her public commitments as empress. We actually came away feeling sorry for her. It is said that Emperor Franz Joseph took his responsibilities very seriously and worked from before dawn each day. Despite being surrounded by beauty, wealth and power, Peggy believes that it was a hard life for the emperors and empresses.
Following our tour, we were ready for an early dinner. We then confirmed the hours for a museum we hope to go to tomorrow if there is time. We headed home to rest up for our last full day in Vienna.
