Today was spent learning about the local history of Beechworth of which Ned Kelly (who is likened to Jesse James) was one of the main characters . The town resembles a small town in the old west. Most of the commercial buildings “downtown” are two story, wooden structures with verandas over their fronts. There are now 4 of the original 61 pubs in the town (about 1 for every 50 residents). The town hall, court house and government buildings are one and two story granite buildings. Beechworth was one of the main towns during the gold rush days with a Chinese community that once outnumbered Europeans. The Chinese community is long gone now along with the gold and the tourism is one of the town’s main industries.

After breakfast, we drove into town to take in a guided walking tour that focused on its history as a gold mining community. Later in the day, we took in a second walking tour that focused on Ned Kelly’s story. It’s interesting that Ned Kelly was viewed as a villain by some and as a hero by others. By some he is considered to be a local “Robin Hood” who helped people in the community and avenged many against the injustices of the police. Unlike Jesse James and other notorious western outlaws, Ned Kelly wore a suit of armor that weighed over 40 kg (more than 80 lbs) during his gun battles. After our tours, we stopped at the local brewery to sample the beer. For the most part, they were pretty good – certainly much better than the last brewery we stopped at. Following our beer tasting, we went back to the Burke Museum that we had briefly visited on one of the tours and spent the rest of the afternoon reading about the town’s history. We then returned to our campground, had supper, read our book and packed it in for the night.
