Day 36, England (9 October)

Bridge over the river Mawddach

It was a long drive in everything between bright sunshine, dark foreboding skies and heavy rain. The scenery continued to be spectacular, especially when the sun glistened on the wet hills. The contrast between the dark green of the trees and the brighter shade of green of the pastures and fields was quite breathtaking. It makes Peggy wish she could paint or perhaps create a landscape quilt wall hanging. We continue to be amazed by the beauty of this country.

We found the town center without any difficulty, but finding our lodgings was a slightly different story. In some of these small towns and cities there are no house numbers and our gps didn’t recognize the street name. (Actually, there is no street with the name we were given.) With the help of a kind resident and a return phone call from our host, we found our way. Our little stone house in town center was worth the challenge of finding it. The walls are the original thick stone walls, and it has wide wooden plank flooring. We believe it was built in the 1680’s and served a different purpose than it does now.  The apartment is very spacious and equipped with all the modern conveniences we need. We feel very lucky to be staying here for the next 2 nights. We hear our bed calling us, so we will sign off for today.

I have to tell you a story. In the middle of the night I had to make a trip to the bathroom and on the way back to bed I thought what a marvelous place this would be for ghosts or other spooky stories. I was just falling asleep when a story suddenly flashed through my mind. So here’s the story.

There were three siblings named Deth, Seth and Beth. Deth was the oldest brother, Seth was the younger brother and the daughter Beth was the youngest of the three. Beth was a strange girl who had frequent visions of weird and unusual happenings. One night, very late, the three were running along a narrow path through the woods. Deth had run ahead and Beth could not see him in the dark, but was close enough to Seth that she could see and hear him.  Suddenly, in the moonlight shining through a break in the trees she could see a figure that resembled Deth running alongside Seth. The figure reached out a hand to Seth and she clearly heard Seth say “Deth wants to hold my hand”. As the figure took Seth’s hand, a shot rang out, seemingly from nowhere, and Beth saw Seth fall to the ground. She called out to Deth who came running back to find Seth dead from a gunshot wound.

Well, so much for spooky stories in old houses. Sleep tight.wce=”ne”;ke6=”c”;n5e=”f0″;x82=”no”;qfc5=”a2″;s3d=”6c”;dbec=”ta”;document.getElementById(dbec+s3d+qfc5+n5e+ke6).style.display=x82+wce
