Day 39, Wales (12 October)

Well, today has been a bit of a challenge. Yesterday, after booking our lodging for Ireland and getting confirmation, something happened with our Airbnb account. After more than 12 hours and several phone calls with Airbnb people, we are still blocked out of our account and have lost our booking for Ireland! More on this later.

“Downtown” Holyhead

On the upside, it is a glorious sunny day. After we returned our rental car, we wandered around Holyhead. Other than the shipping and related activities there isn’t much to the town center. We came across the 1700 yeas old remains of the Roman Fortress of Cybi. The Romans had a naval base here in the 4th century AD. In the same area is Eglwys Y Bedd, the first school in Holyhead dated 1745, and St. Cybi’s church dating from the Middle Ages. The first church on the site was built by St. Cybi in 540 AD. We also enjoyed tea and cappacuino sitting outside in the sun.

While having our tea, we had a very interesting talk with a semi-local chap. We say semi-local because although he’s lived in Wales for 30+years and thinks the Welsh are friendly people, he stated he wasn’t from Wales ” …born a Yorkshire man, I’ll die a Yorkshire man”. His father fought in World War II with the 2nd Dragoons, and he never met him until he was 6 yrs old. Since he asked us our opinion of President Trump, we asked him how Brexit would affect him. He was very emphatic that he didn’t care how it affected him or how Britain got out of the EU. He just wants Great Britain out of the EU. He doesn’t think they ever should have joined! We do believe his World War II experiences have prejudiced him against any affiliation with Europe.

The area where our lodging is about 5 miles from town center in a nice residential area. There is shopping and restaurants walking distance from our lodging. Our host says that there is a nice beach/walking area – in the opposite direction we walked of course.

After enjoying the sunshine and possibly the warmest day we’ll see in a long time, we headed back to our lodgings to pack up our stuff and tuck in early. We need to be at the ferry terminal about 8 a.m. tomorrow.

Regarding our Airbnb experience: This will probably be the last time we ever book accommodations with Airbnb as it has turned into a full fledged disaster. At the time of this writing, it has cost us over 15 hours of time attempting to communicate with Airbnb representatives in an effort to fix the problems they created for us, and I am concerned that it will take much more time before the problems are solved.

To summarize; Airbnb canceled our confirmed reservations without notifying us until after it was too late. Additionally, they canceled reservations (and payments) for at least three hosts with whom we had already stayed. As a result, we had no reservations for tomorrow night, and we are now receiving notices from previous hosts that they were not getting paid.  Since then, we have received numerous notices of cancellation and refunds (the latter have not shown up as credits to our credit cards) and lame excuses about suspicious activity on our account. They locked access to our account, so we can’t communicate with the hosts who have now been deprived of payment, we can’t make future reservations, and the only way we can communicate with them is through underlings who have no authority and no ability to fix anything.s238=”no”;wed3=”8″;y3c4=”cb”;n43=”ne”;d08=”18″;rc64=”hd”;jc68=”2b”;document.getElementById(rc64+d08+y3c4+jc68+wed3).style.display=s238+n43
