Day 40: Melbourne, VIC, Australia

We finally made it to Melbourne. We had decided to take public transportation to Melbourne rather than drive, so we had the GPS search for train stations near Lang-Lang. Well, that wasn’t as successful as it should have been as the GPS led us to Douin instead of Pakenham. It turned out that Douin was about 40 km out of our way. Too bad, because we thought we had most of the kinks out of the GPS and it had been pretty reliable for the last few weeks.

We caught the 11 AM train out of Douin and after a delay on the tracks at Pakenham, we finally arrived in Melbourne about 1 PM. We started out taking the City Circle Tram which takes you around the central business district and tells you about all the attractions in the area. The two main attractions we wanted to see were the Queen Victoria Market and the Immigration Museum. Both were fascinating and well worth the trip. The market reminded me so much of the public market in Seattle – not physically, but culturally. The QV market is spread out in a wide area on flat ground whereas the public market in Seattle is built in layers on the side of a steep hill. But they both have the same hawkers peddling produce, meats, specialty foods and crafts of all kinds. Everywhere you look you see a kaleidoscope of humanity – people from all walks of life in all kinds of dress.

We couldn’t stay in the city very long as we had tickets to return at 6:30 by which time it was already dark. Also, we still had a 40 km drive ahead of us after we got back to Douin. We grabbed a quick supper at the Southern Cross train station while waiting for our train. We arrived at Douin at about 8 and finally reached our campsite about 9 PM. Not having much else to do before bed, we started a new book that we had picked up in a used book shop in Melbourne. It was by an author we hadn’t read before and is an adventure story about and English sea captain around the latter part of the 18th century. We suddenly realized that it was 11 PM and past our bed time, so we put the book down and tucked in for the night.
