Day 42, Monday, 24 Sep: Munich and Oktoberfest

For those of you who don’t care or already know about the origin of Oktoberfest, you can skip the next couple of sentences. It originated with Prince Ludwig’s (later King Ludwig I) marriage. The Munich citizens were invited to celebrate on the fields in front of the gates to Munich. The horse races at the end of the marriage festivities were repeated the following year and Oktoberfest evolved. It lasts 2 weeks, and we are fortunate enough to be close enough to join in the festivities.

Oktoberfest actually began Saturday, but figuring Munich would be a madhouse, we decided to put off attending the party until today. Munich is an easy 1 hour train ride from where we are staying. The majority of events take place in tents at the fair grounds. Given the crowds at the fairgrounds, we decided to combine a little tour of Old Munich with an Oktoberfest celebration at the original Hofbrauhaus which is a beer hall in Munich, originally built in 1589 by Bavarian Duke Maximilian I as an extension of the Staatliches HofbrÀuhaus brewery. It was converted to a drinking hall in 1828. All of the rooms in the building except the historic beer hall (“Schwemme”) were destroyed in the World War II bombings and restoration was completed in 1958.

The Hofbrauhaus was packed and in full party mode complete with an oompah band dressed in lederhosen. With a little difficulty we found a couple of empty places at a table to share. The band, food, beer and overall atmosphere were wonderful. Wayne had his full liter of beer and Peggy had her 14 inch soft pretzel which she shared with table mates. Since probably 50% of the Oktoberfest celebrants were English speaking (from UK, Australia, India, and US), it’s not too surprising that our table mates were from the US. They were in Germany because their son wanted to celebrate his birthday drinking beer at Oktoberfest! They were also celebrating his employment in his college major.

Hofbrauhaus gave us the taste of Oktoberfest we were seeking so we can now say we’ve experienced Oktoberfest where it originated. After a few hours of food, beer, music and a little bit of conversation during band breaks we were happy to head back to the train and Schliersee.

(This is for our son-in-law Bob who is a model train lover.) I almost forgot to mention the train run by BOB. You run a great train, Bob.
