Day 45, Thursday, 27 Sep: Schliersee (last day)

We decided to spend our last day here at the Karma Bavaria relaxing, walking into town and sitting by the lake. It was a perfect sunny, early fall day. We stopped by a local cafe for cappuccino/tea and pastry. Then we walked down to the lake and found a bench to read, people watch, and enjoy looking at the lake. Peggy succumbed to the lull of warm sunshine and fell asleep until the wind kicked up and chestnuts began to fall on us.

It was just like home only instead of acorns falling on us it was chestnuts. Although the chestnuts are bigger than the acorns, the chestnuts fell from a lower height so the impact is actually less.
We decided that was our cue to head back for happy hour and dinner. We have been chatting with fellow travelers this past week and wanted an opportunity to meet with them again and say farewell until our paths cross again.

Dinner was excellent. We headed back to our apartment and read our story until it was time for sleep in preparation for the next part of our travel adventure – in Heidelberg. We had originally planned to spend time in Frankfurt but were advised that Heidelberg would be much better. Frankfurt is just another HUGE city and being the banking center of Germany, it’s sort of like a German New York. As we have said many times, we live near a big city and really don’t need to travel just to see other big cities. Heidelberg, on the other hand, is a small, university city of about 150,000 that was spared much of the WWII devastation experienced by so many other European cities. As a result, much of the old architecture is well preserved. Peggy will still get her river cruise, but it will be on the Nekar River instead of the Rhine.
