Today was a lovely day. It started out overcast, but later the clouds burned off and it was sunny, breezy and warm. We started out to the library to access the internet for email and in order to upload some photos. I have been having a lot of trouble uploading photos recently only to discover that there are severe (by our standards) bandwidth limitations in South Australia. The government is trying to fix that, but the solution is not here yet, so I am unable to upload the photos.

We left for Semaphore a little before noon and arrived about noon. Semaphore is a very small, charming town dating back to the middle of the 19th century. There is a beautiful park alongside the bay that extends the full length of the town. In the center there is a long jetty that juts out into the bay at the end of Semaphore Street. Semaphore Street is the main business district in town and along it are several 19th century buildings that have been preserved and/or restored including the Federal Hotel, the Custom Boarding Station (now a private residence) the Time Ball Tower, the Semaphore Library and Police Station. Along the Esplanade, there are many other old preserved/restored buildings.

We followed the Esplanade all the way out to North Haven at the outer harbor and then back south to Port Adelaide. Port Adelaide was a bit of a let down after Semaphore. It is a very active port and we saw a lot of shipping and industrial areas, but overall, it lacked the charm of Semaphore. We explored around for a little while and then decided it was time to return “home” for the day.

After getting side tracked onto a freeway going (forever) in the wrong direction, we recovered and arrived back at our cabin about 5:30. We kibitzed with the neighbors for awhile, then fixed dinner and worked on the blog entry for the day. Tomorrow we head out into the outback toward Alice Spring.
