Sorry folks. We have been very busy enjoying paradise here in Lilia, Brittany France and not blogging.

Our travels Thursday took us through some beautiful countryside. Although we passed through a great deal of farmland, we left the feel of traveling through Kansas behind yesterday. The rolling hills and fields were quite picturesque with definite signs of autumn. Some fields were plowed and ready for spring planting, others were green with fall crops and there were cornfields waiting for the harvest of the stalks. We don’t know if the limited leaf color of the trees is normal for early October or a result of the hot, dry summer.

While we were in wine country, it was interesting comparing our last trip to Europe in spring. When we visited Tuscany, Bordeaux and Beaujolais then, the vines were a lush green and the grapes were the size of pinheads. Now the leaves are yellowed and the grapes are gone from the vines. The good news is that they will soon be wine!

At the end of Thursday’s journey, we found a little piece of heaven on the Atlantic coast in the Brittany region of France. Lilia is a small village near a town called Plouguerneau on the north coast of Brittany. According to our host, “we are at the edge of Europe” looking on the Celtic Sea at the base of the English Channel. We arrived about 3 pm and will be here 4 nights. The weather is absolutely perfect: not a cloud in the sky and a light cool breeze. It was at low tide and we had a lovely walk on the beach in shirt sleeves! Before dinner, we strolled along the beach out to a point called Kastell Ac’h from which you can see the Ile Vierge and its lighthouse which is the tallest lighthouse in Europe and the sixth tallest in the world.

We had dinner at a lovely restaurant called Le Castel Ac’h (named after the landmark) that looked out over the water. Since the sky was cloudless with almost no particulates, then sun was just like a big yellow ball sinking into the horizon. It was a dark night with not much street lighting, so the stars were beautiful. By the way, dinner was excellent. (At first figuring out the French menu was challenging. The further off the beaten path we get, the fewer English speaking people and English menus there are.) I indulged in an all seafood dinner consisting of oysters, shrimp and baby lobsters – something I haven’t had in a long time. The seafood here is marvelous. Since Peggy is allergic to shellfish, she had to settle for a steak (but that was delicious as well.)
