Day 52, Sep 7: Hot Springs, ND to Valentine, NB & Mt. Rushmore

Our primary destination today was Mt. Rushmore. Although we were there on our cross country trip 12 years ago, it had been completely shrouded in fog. This time, the weather was perfect and we were well rewarded with a clear and wonderful view of the amazing sculpture. It has changed substantially since we were here last with more amenities for tourists and a beautiful walkway lined with granite columns each with 4 state’s (and territories) flags mounted at the top and their dates of admission engraved in the sides beneath the flags. It was a very impressive site.

We learned that in addition to Jefferson being a principal author of the Declaration of Independence he also wrote the first recipe for ice cream in America. An interesting piece of trivia and a wonderful snack.

Since our plans for camping at Custer State Park had been messed up, we decided to go camping in the Bad Lands National Park. From the map, the Sage Creek campground looked promising although we were warned that it was very primitive. Well, primitive was a gross understatement. The access from the west was 12 miles of gravel road (Sage Creek Road) over mostly dessert country. The only water available was at the town (if you can call it that) near entrance to the park. There was a clean pit toilet at the campsite, but that’s about it. Otherwise nothing but bare land, thousands of prairie dogs and at least as many buffalo chips. There were about a half dozen hearty campers. After looking around, we decided that it was a little too primitive and opted to move on.

On the way out of the park, we drove through some spectacular vistas of the badlands. (It’s easy to see how they got their name.)

Our pictures do not do justice to the stark beauty. The striations in the rock formations are fascinating. The views we saw in and out of the park are indescribable. Parts of the views today as other days reminded us of the Australian Outback with the addition a few hills.

We drove through open country sparsely dotted with homes and ranches. Our travels took us through a portion of the Oglala Lakota Sioux Reservation. As we travel eastward towards home, the days are getting shorter and we lost an hour as we crossed into the Central Time Zone. Eventually, we found lodging in Valentine, NB for a good night’s rest before we continue our journey.
