Day 56: Cairns, QLD

After the last couple of strenuous days driving, we slept in late and took our time getting started. We had researched some of the things to do in the area, found lots, and decided to extend our stay another two nights. We had to go to Cairns first and take care of the bank problem that had plagued us from the day we got to Australia. On the way from Alice Springs to Barkly Roadhouse, we had received a call from WesPac Bank in Cairns that our ATM cards were there waiting for us and wanting to know when we would arrive to pick them up. Knowing that they were there, our first order of business was to take care of that little matter.

After retrieving our ATM cards at the bank we did a little shopping and found a couple more things to make our camping life more pleasant; one being an LED book lamp for reading at night. We looked for some books to read as we were beginning to exhaust our “library”, but could find none that we really wanted. So we went to the city library to use the internet. Voila! We managed to get on the internet and upload a bunch of photos that we had not been able to upload due to poor connectivity. I am now certain that poor connectivity is what has been plaguing us, so I’m ready to do more photo editing and uploading.

We then walked around the city and explored the central park, the marina and the Esplanade all of which are beautiful. In the park is a swimming pool that has a sandy beach at one end. I have never seen anything like it. The little kids were having a ball playing in the sand and running into the water. On the way back from the marina it started to rain. We hurried back to the Esplanade to get under the cover provided by the shops alongside. Most sidewalks in the area are covered to protect people from the sun, but they work just as well in the rain. As we walked along, we spotted a delightful Italian restaurant and decided to have an early supper. The food was excellent, the chianti was wonderful and the service was superb.

Following dinner, we started for “home” in the rain and dark. The road leading from Atherton to Cairns is a very windy, mountain road and it takes about an hour and a half to get back from Cairns. Needless to say, we were bushed by the time we got back and since it was too late to start anything serious, we just settled for a glass of wine, some story time and bed.

Cheers,
