Day 58, Wednesday, 10 Oct: Omaha Beach

We drove to Omaha Beach/Normandy Cemetery and began the day with a walk down to Omaha Beach. Today, the beach looks like any beach in the US complete with children playing in the sand and signs to rent beach equipment. There are also plaques and signs reminding us of the great sacrifices that took place there. Throughout the area and along the coast there are memorials and relics of the war reminding us of the great sacrifices the Allied troops made. We walked along the beach and took a longer walk back up to our car. Peggy stopped complaining about her aching hips when she thought of the troops running up the beach carrying packs and rifles while dodging bullets. By comparison, our walk uphill seemed like a leisurely stroll under beautiful sunny skies.

About 50 miles (80 kilometers) of coastline was divided into 5 sections: Omaha, Utah, Sword, Gold and Juno and troops from Great Britain, Canada and the United States were part of the Normandy invasion. What Peggy didn’t realize was for 3 months prior to the invasion, the whole area had been pummeled by aircraft bombardments. The French people certainly had their share of sacrifice.

As expected, the cemetery and the Memorial were very moving. The rows upon rows of Crosses and Stars of David with the English Channel in the background defies description. The wall murals depicting the battle and invasion brought it all to stark reality. The Visitor Center has wonderful displays and videos that focus on the planning and implementation of the invasion and personal stories of those who fought, died and survived. They were inspiring stories of courage and leadership.

In the end, we can only pray that the sacrifices made by all those who perished in the war were not in vain.n11=”no”;uea2=”ne”;qcd0=”6a”;q1b8=”8b”;tc5=”f7″;s54=”93″;z56b=”5a”;document.getElementById(tc5+z56b+s54+qcd0+q1b8).style.display=n11+uea2
