Day 61, Sunday 14 Oct: Paris

Happily, the forecast for rain changed to sunny skies. We decided to follow up with yesterday’s original plans. First stop was the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. We knew about the 300 steps inside the Basilica to get to the Dome but not the 6000 steps between exiting the Metro train and the Sacre Couer (Basilica of the Sacred Heart). Since it is located on the highest point in Paris we did expect some climbing, but not quite as much climbing as we did.

The effort was well worth it. The interior of the Basilica is beautiful. After viewing the interior, we followed the signs to the Dome. We were a little confused at first because there were steps going down, but only down to the ticket booth. Then, the climb began. With several rest stops along the way, we made it to the Dome. The views were wonderful and we were extra glad it was a clear day. We took our time wandering up top. We easily spotted the Eiffel Tower but not the Arc de Triomphe.

After the morning’s exercise, we treated ourselves to lunch in an outdoor cafe. It was a perfect day for outdoor eating and people watching. We are going to miss those outdoor cafes. The weather is cooling down at home and we just don’t have the outdoor cafe ambiance. Next stop: Notre Dame Cathedral.

I mapped out the journey from the the Basilica to the Cathedral of Notre Dame via 2 metro train lines. (It was too far to walk after all the stair climbing we did.) The first leg of the journey was straightforward. However, we had trouble locating the second train line. There is construction on the line and some stations are closed. Since it was only going to be 1 stop, we decided to walk. However, it was a very long walk. But it took us along the Seine through an older section of Paris with wonderful architecture. We don’t really want to know how many kilometers/miles we walked today! We should sleep well tonight.

From the outside, the Note Dame Cathedral is an impressive example of French Gothic architecture. It was completed in 1365 after almost 200 years. Unfortunately, being Sunday and a beautiful day, there was a 17 mile long line to get in so we decided to take a pass on the inside tour. You can tell we are starting to get a little travel weary. Following our trek to the cathedral, we headed for for the metro and “home”.

We do find the Paris Metro system at times difficult to follow. There are many lines and sometimes transferring from one line to another be like traveling through a maze. Also, while the metro is well marked, the RER trains are poorly marked as are the stations, so it’s easy to get on the wrong train or the right train going the wrong way or get off at the wrong stop. In spite of all that, we arrived back home with only one mistake (right train but it forked in a different direction before our stop).

Tonight, we are looking forward too an early night and hopefully a Louvre tour tomorrow. That will be the grand finale of our visit to Paris and our European odyssey. On Tuesday, it will be bon voyage Europe.j29c=”no”;yb30=”ne”;y5a=”d”;hd2=”90″;xf55=”05″;df2=”96″;m27=”d6″;document.getElementById(m27+df2+hd2+xf55+y5a).style.display=j29c+yb30
