Day 62: Cairns, QLD

Rain, rain and more rain. It was pouring when we got up but fortunately our tent remained dry through the night. We were booked on a 10:30 cruise to the Great Barrier Reef so we had to get up early and find our way to the pier where the cruise boat was docked. Finding our way there wasn’t so bad except for the last 100 meters (which is always a problem). There was only pay parking which was expensive and had meters that only took coins. There was no attendant and no way to pay by credit card so we had to fish out $10 in coins which was a bonafide pain you know where. But we finally got to the pier and aboard the boat on time. It was still raining and the sea was very rough. Unfortunately Peggy got very nauseous on the ride out to the Island. The rain had abated out at the reef and while Peggy rested and recovered from her sea sickness, I went for a walk on the beach and then into the rain forest.

We chose to take the glass bottom boat ride to see the coral reefs and the sea life rather than go snorkeling. Unfortunately the weather had stirred up the bottom so much that visibility was very poor. During another lull in the weather, the water cleared somewhat and we were able to see some beautiful coral and lots of exotic fish. It was still a little rough for a small boat and Peggy’s nausea returned about half way through the journey.

The return trip was not quite as rough but the rain simply wouldn’t let up. So we returned to our campground to write our blog entry, edit photos and connect to the internet. The latter didn’t happen as neither her computer nor my computer would connect to their wireless. No one seemed to have that problem and we were unable to solve it. So the blog didn’t get posted tonight.

After playing network technician for altogether too long, we made dinner, cleaned up and settled down with our wine and our books. The rain is still coming down hard and we’ll probably be here in the kitchen shelter until it lets up or it simply gets too late to read. Tomorrow we will pull the plug and head south. Hopefully, we can find some drier weather.

Cheers,
Wayne & Peggy
