Day 67: Miles to Goondiwindi, QLD

It was cloudy when we awoke this morning with a possibility of rain. We got up early, prepared breakfast, cleaned up, took down our (nice dry) tent and packed up the car. There is a delightful historical museum in Miles where there are over 30 small buildings arranged in a “typical outback” town. (It actually resembles Miles in miniature.) Most of the buildings are original but were moved to the museum to be preserved. In a lot of ways, the museum resembles Sturbridge Village near Boston and the historical museum in Herberton. They have done a wonderful job of recreating a small outback town.

We spent a couple of hours in the museum and around noon went to get tea and capaccino. There is a small bakery/cafe that has wonderful pastries, cakes and muffins. (It’s where we wanted to go yesterday, but it wasn’t open.) We had our snack and then departed for Goondiwindi (don’t ask me how to pronounce it).

The road to Goondiwindi is long, straight and flat with very little traffic. We would drive sometimes as long as 10 minutes without seeing another vehicle. The weather was overcast, but not raining and it was a very pleasant drive. We made the distance (about 250 km) in about 3 hours and arrived in Goondiwindi at about 4 PM. We stopped at the local library where they informed us that there was a good chance of rain tomorrow, so we opted to rent a cabin. We found a reasonable cabin, checked in and went shopping for dinner. After dinner, it was time to catch up on our blog. As we have not had internet access for a few days, I have fallen behind so it is taking a little longer.

The weather is supposed to clear up along the coast on Wednesday, so we’ll probably hunker down here and explore what there is to see locally tomorrow. We have heard there is a cotton plantation and there are a couple of wineries in the area, so that should keep us occupied.

Cheers,
