Day 71: Armidale, NSW

We awoke to a lovely, clear, bright, cool and windy morning. We ate breakfast, loaded the car and checked out of the motel to go meet our tour bus at 10. The bus took us on a free, 3 ½ hour tour of the city that turned out to be a real treat. Armidale is such a charming and fascinating city with many schools, colleges and churches. Like Boston, I think there’s a church or college on every corner. Compared with many cities and towns we have visited, Armidale is quite affluent. The architecture is amazing. Old buildings preserved for over a century (long by Australia standards) and many newer buildings that have been designed to earlier architectural styles. In the center of the city is a promenade with a mix of shops, offices and government buildings.

The bus driver was a wealth of historical information and a real comedian. He entertained us non-stop for the duration of the tour. Along the tour, we stopped at the railway station (now mostly a museum) for mid-morning tea and a talk by a local historian. Later we stopped at the University of New England for another lecture by its local historian. The only problem with the tour was that you can’t take decent photos from the bus. So after we finished the tour, we decided to walk about the city center taking photos the rest of the afternoon, extend our stay another day and drive about the city tomorrow for more photos.

We left the information center and walked up to the St. Kilda Hotel to check out their $7 lunch which turned out to be very good. We spent the rest of the afternoon taking photos downtown. Then went back to the motel we had stayed at last night and begged for our room back (which the landlord was most pleased to give us). After the very large and late afternoon lunch, we weren’t really hungry, so for supper we snacked on cheese, crackers, fruit and wine. Afterwards, we read our books, worked on the blog and turned in for the night. Tomorrow we’ll do a drive-about the city, then move on towards Hunter Valley.
