Day 80: Sydney, NSW

We woke up to another gorgeous morning and went up to market at The Rocks for breakfast which was a real delight. Following breakfast, we went shopping at the market for the grandbabies and picked up a couple of small souvenirs. Then we went browsing around The Rocks (one of the original settlement areas). It’s great to see how they have preserved so many of the old buildings. We then climbed the southern pylon of the Sydney Bridge for a wonderful view of the city and the harbor. The bridge has four identical 87 meter (about 250 ft.) high pylons, two at each end, that are more for aesthetic rather than functional purposes. They do help to stabilize the bridge, but they are not really necessary. However, when you see artists’ pictures of the bridge without the pylons, it is nowhere near as graceful or impressive.

We spent quite a while taking pictures and just admiring the view from the top of the pylon, then descended and walked around the Circular Quay to the Opera House to check on what was playing. Unfortunately, opera season does not resume until October which is surprising, because we usually don’t associate opera with late spring and summer. It would have been fun to see a real opera in the Sydney Opera House, but it just didn’t pan out.

We spent some time wandering around the Opera House and then walked up to the Convict and Police Museum. Unfortunately, there was only about 30 minutes until closing time and they are only open on weekends. After explaining that we would be returning home on Wednesday, the attendant took pity on us and allowed us to wander about free of charge until closing time. It is a fascinating museum and I just wish that we had had more time to explore it.
