Day 9: Auckland, NZ

It’s a warm, cloudy, drizzly day today. After breakfast, we were given a ride to the car rental place in Auckland and checked out a car. The first order of business was to purchase another cell phone. (Our Australia cell phone could not be used in New Zealand.) We then drove to Auckland (about 20 km). It should have taken us about 20 minutes up the expressway from the airport to the city, but guess what. Our GPS hates expressways and refused to guide us to it. Unfortunately, no one sells maps any more and without a map or cooperative GPS, it took us about an hour to get to the city.

In the city, we spent about 3 hours touring the Auckland War Memorial Museum which is about a lot more about NZ history than it is about war. Much of the museum is dedicated to Maori history, It’s truly amazing how they managed to sail to New Zealand from Polynesia; and it would be even more fascinating to know how they managed to get to Polynesia in the first place and where they came from before that.

I have to confess to one of the dumbest tricks I’ve done in a long time. I was carrying the keys to both rental cars and Peggy was concerned that we would lose the keys to our Australia car, so I carefully stored the keys in a safe place in my backpack and locked it away in the trunk. You guessed it. Wrong keys. What’s worse is that even though the car was open, there was no interior trunk release. About an hour later a NZ AA (like our AAA) person came to help and after about another hour we had the trunk open and we were on our way again. On the plus side, the AA man was very friendly and gave us lots of sightseeing tips.

We wanted to have dinner at a restaurant called “The Grill” that my daughter highly recommended, but it was Saturday night, we had no reservations and the place was booked. So we wound up having dinner at a small Italian restaurant nearby where I had the best lasagna I ever ate. With a great dinner and with a nice glass of New Zealand merlot, we were ready to head for the barn. Taking all back roads (our GPS doesn’t allow us to take highways) we got back to the hotel about 40 minutes later and after a half hour writing up our adventure, we are ready pack it in. Tomorrow we head for Mt. Maunganui where we will meet up with a friend of my daughter. So, until then,
