Sadly, it is time to say goodbye to Amy and continue our journey. It was wonderful getting to spend time with her. Today, Mt. Rainier is hidden by clouds and a layer of smoke from the distant forest fires. Perhaps it is the Mountain’s way of saying it’s time to go. We have really had some amazing views of it the last couple of days and a fun visit in Seattle.
We drove south to Tacoma, the Tacoma Narrows Bridge and over a number of backroads to reach US 101. We passed through some beautiful scenery under partly cloudy skies on our way to Olympic National Park. There were no vacancies at our first choice, Kalaloch Campground, but there were several available spots at South Beach Campground right on the beach.
Despite the cloudy skies we walked along the beach after setting up our tent butting up to the hillside to help break the wind. We were rewarded with a great ocean view and whale sightings. Some whales were migrating south and others were part of a pod that has established residency off the Oregon coast. Unfortunately, they were too far off shore to get any photos.
The weatherman had threatened rain for this evening, so we had our dinner and tucked in early. Tomorrow we’ll go beach combing.
