Days 28 – 30, Aug 14 – 17: Eagle Lake, CA

Monday morning we bid adieu to Peter and Wendy and headed to Eagle Lake to camp with some friends. Around 11, we headed up the Skyway to CA 32, CA 36, A1 to Eagle Lake. The views of the Sierra Nevada’s are absolutely magnificent – from snow capped mountains to deep blue alpine lakes. It took about 4 hours from Magalia as we stopped along the way for some ice cream and a home made blackberry pie for tonight’s dessert.

We had originally planned to visit our friend Pat in Chico, CA, but since she had reservations at Merrill Campground at Eagle Lake, we decided to join her, her daughter and her son and his girlfriend for a couple of nights camping. It was only the fourth time we had set up camp with our new tent, but all went well and we were all set up long before dinner time. We had a wonderful steak dinner barbecued over an open fire topped off with a wonderful bottle of pinot noir.

Eagle Lake provided a special place for our wonderful visit. The setting is beautiful and peaceful – large pine trees, lots of shade and beautiful lake views. Alas, with the drought that CA is experiencing, the lake is considerably smaller than in the past. Since school is in session, the campground was the most quiet campground Peggy can recall. While roaming around the campground, our hostess Pat, came across a 1948 CJ2A Jeep just like the one she and her husband had when they were newlyweds! It brought back such wonderful memories and she got to ride in it!

Alas, the time flies when you’re having fun. It would have been easy to spend a whole month there but unfortunately, we have a long ways to go and a lot to do before we get home. So off we go to Sacramento to visit with another friend – this time a transplant from Virginia that Peggy has known for 20 years. After that, we will be heading to Oregon to view the solar eclipse.
