Days 49, 50 (2, 3 June 2025): Salt Water State Park to Eureka, CA

Monday, 2 June, was a lazy day. We started off the day foraging for food and firewood. For food, we had to drive up the highway about 30 miles to a small village called Gualala (the store at Stewarts Point was closed), which ate up a good part of the mid day. Afterwards, we explored our campground and read our book. We had supper about 6:30, washed up, secured all the food (after all, we are in bear country) started a bon fire for the evening and sat in front of the fire and continued to read our book  About 10:30 we put out the fire and tucked in for the night.

Tuesday morning, 3 June. After 2 nights of camping in a lovely wooded setting, it was time to continue our journey. This was our first tent camping trip in 2 years and breaking camp today took us the longest time that we can remember. Our muscles, bones, and joints don’t have the flexibility or strength they used to have. Also, we are less tolerant of the chilly overnight temperatures (mid to upper 40s). In spite of that, we fully enjoyed the magnificent forest campground, about 1/2 mile from the ocean, and looking at the night sky and our camp fire while sipping some fine California wine.

We set off north about noon and drove straight through to Eureka, with a couple of pit stops and photo ops. It was about a 6 hour drive along the magnificent coast. Just south of Eureka, CA 1 ends where it joins US 101
