Days 9 &10, Jul 26 & 27: North Rim Grand Canyon

WOW!! Words are inadequate for the magnificent and humbling views. This is not our first trip to the Grand Canyon, but we are still in awe. It is just amazing what Mother Nature can create without any interference or “improvement” from mankind. We have been fortunate enough to be able to spend 2 days wandering around one of the 7 Wonders of the World.

In my view (and I think I have convinced Peggy) the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is much nicer than the South Rim. It is much more pristine, less commercial, less crowded and closer to the way nature made it. It is nearly 9000 feet above sea level and about 1200 feet higher than the South Rim so it gets more rain and snow and is covered with magnificent Ponderosa pines and quaking aspen (which look so much like birch but are an entirely different species).

The views of the canyon are spectacular. The multicolored layers of rock, laid down on the floor of the ocean by rivers carrying away eroded soils over millions of years are fascinating. The river is so far down, and the drop off so steep that you can’t actually see the river from up here, but the results of its awesome power are mind blowing. Unlike the Mississippi River which drops 1475 feet over its 2320 mile course (about 7 and a half inches per mile), the Colorado River drops 9010 feet over its 1450 mile course (a a little over 6 feet per mile). As a result, the speed and erosive power of the Colorado river are so much greater which accounts for the depth of the valleys and canyons it has created. Just the thought that the plateau we are on which is 9000 feet above the sea was once under the sea makes you stop and wonder about the awesome power which raised the sea bed to such great height. Thinking about it makes one realize how puny we humans really are. It is truly humbling.

And on top of that, the night sky was absolutely clear and the stars were more brilliant than we had seen since our trip to New Zealand. The milky way was like a splash of white paint across the sky and even polaris shown brightly.
