Europe: Day 22 (April 26)

Nice is the fifth largest city in Italy. It has a rich history of tourism but it is also an important port. It has a wonderful old section, markets and museums. It is a city we could easily spend a lot more time in, but we must be in Siena/Tuscany area Saturday for our reservations and want to see the Leaning tower of Pisa along the way. From our hotel we took one of the city buses to the pick up point for our bus tour. Fortunately, we had a fair idea of where we needed to go from our wanderings yesterday. Nice is a wonderful combination of new and old. In ancient times it was an important trading post in the Mediterranean and then it was part of the Roman empire. This was followed by invasions from Barbarians, Ligurians and Saracens. It was later ruled by the Counts of Provence and eventually was under the protection of the house of Savoy. It has been a part of France since 1860. Because of its moderate climate it has been a popular vacation spot since the early 1800s. Many of the former villas, castles and hotels that were built by or for the rich and famous have survived because they have been converted to museums, government offices or privately owned apartments.

The architecture is wonderful to view and clearly shows the influences of the different cultures that have lived here in Nice. There are amazing views of the sea from the hilltop homes. For a while, we strolled along the beach (aka C’ote d’Azur or French Riviera), stopped at a small restaurant for some refreshments and went to find a bus back to our hotel. (I was really surprised that the beach is not sandy at all, but very gravelly. I was fully prepared for brilliant white sandy beaches.) As with the other places we have been there are wonderful plazas, fountains and gardens. There is much more to see and do but our energy does not match our interest!! We are grateful for what we have been able to see and do. Tomorrow we are off to see the wonders of Italy.
