Europe: Day 23 (April 27)

DSCN0993Our European adventures continued today as we entered Italy. It was a relatively short drive – about 3 hours on a toll road. However, this is not your average toll road.  The scenery was absolutely magnificent. We had views of the Mediterranean Sea and wonderful countryside with homes and villages built into the sides of hills. The hills go right down to the sea and ravines are so steep that the road must tunnel through the hills and bridge the ravines. We must have passed through 50 or more tunnels and that many bridges. Frequently, as we came out of a tunnel the Mediterranean would be sparkling on our right with beautiful hillsides on our left. Unlike the French roads, there were plenty of spots to pull off and take pictures. We like the Italian Riviera better than the French Riviera.

DSCN1015We arrived at our destination, a small city, Rapallo southeast of Genoa at about 3 PM. With help from very kind locals we managed to pay for parking and find our way to the Tourist Information office at about 3:30 PM. Apparently Italians take their lunch/siesta seriously. The office was closed until 4:30. What did we do you ask? We acted like Europeans and found a cafe on a plaza and had beer, wine and a sandwich. The sunshine was delightful. We arrived back at the info booth as the employee was setting up. It was her first day working alone. We told her that was fine it was our first day in Italy. She found us a nice B&B, the Villa Cristina, complete with parking & breakfast. It is like a small hotel with a charming room and a very gracious hostess.

DSCN1011After checking in we explored Rapallo. It is a picturesque, relaxing, comfortable seaside city without all the hustle and bustle of Nice. It is complete with the interesting architectural style homes we have found in southern France  and Spain and the narrow streets (alleys really) with small and big plazas all around. It has a Castle (small fortress really) that was built in the mid 1500s for protection against pirate attacks. It has a pretty cathedral and the views of  surrounding hills are terrific.
