Europe: Day 28 (May 2)

Well as the saying goes “Into each life a little rain must fall.” Well other than the light misty rain we had on Gibraltar, we have had no rain until today. Despite the rain, we set off at 8 a.m to catch the bus to Siena. We had 4 goals in mind & successfully completed 3 out of 4. With the aid of our Siena city map and GPS by thumb as Wayne says we found our way to the bank and now have cash for our trip to Rome tomorrow. Since it was a long walk (even without wrong turns) in the cold rain we took a cab to goal #2 – train station for our tickets to Rome tomorrow. On way to taxi we stopped for a hot cup of tea & cappuccino. It sure felt good to warm up a bit. Our pants were wet up to our calves.

We also detoured to post office to mail postcards home. Since the stamps had GPS tracking we couldn’t mail them at post office. We had to go to the mail box at the tobacco shop. Tobacco is just a a small side business. It’s where you get the bus ticket and many other items! Finally we made it to train and with minimal difficulty we got out tickets. Thankfully most Europeans in service industry speak some English. Peggy is determined to learn a foreign language before returning to Europe.

Since the rain was continuing and we were getting wetter where the coats weren’t covering, we cancelled our planned 2.5 hour walking tour. We took another taxi to the Piazza with the information center so we can plan a wine tasting tour when we return from Rome. We can’t possibly be in Tuscany and not do at least 1 wine tasting. The rain had finally stopped but the sky didn’t look too promising. At least the sun was sporadically shining. We slowly made our way back to the bus depot. We enjoyed the sights along the way. The Siena Cathedral is beautiful. Even though we have been experiencing the narrow alleys that have outdoor eating places since arriving in Europe and the very steep hills (especially since coming to Tuscany), we are still amazed by them and how the locals navigate the roads. One young lady backed her car up a steep hill (for close to the equivalent of 2 blocks) until she reached the Piazza where she could turn around. She did it at a pretty good speed too!!

We found our way to the bus depot and with some help of locals we found the correct bus (at
least 10 to choose from) to our home away from home. We were happy to get home, put on dry clothes and have another hot cup of tea/coffee. We learned we need rain pants for our next trip AND Peggy will tuck her purse inside her coat the next time it rains. 7 hours later, the purse is still damp!
