We sadly said “Arrivederci, Italia” as we crossed over the Alps and into Austria. (The border between Italy and Austria was not well marked and we weren’t even sure we were in Austria until the road signs stopped being written in two languages and we saw our first Austrian police car. It’s like going from Arlington County into Fairfax County. No border checks, no hassle — it’s really nice.)
We drove into the Alps with alternating clouds, sun and light rain. The views were spectacular. It looked like the villages just grew out of the mountainside with lush green hills.
We headed for the city of Reutte (elevation approximately 2,516 feet) in western Austria not far from Germany, Italy, Lichtenstein and Switzerland. The scenery is magnificent. We hope to see the remains/ museum of the Ehrenberg Fortress built in the late 13th century on Sunday before moving on. Tonight we will relax and enjoy our stay at the Hotel Hirsch a family run hotel in the middle of Ruette.
Ciao,
Wayne and Peggy
