Today we left Pontarlier and headed to wine country near Lyon France. It was a very pretty ride through the country with green rolling hills and the mountains in the distance. We are staying in a small city outside Lyon, Bourg en Bresse. After settling into our hotel we explored some of the wine trail. There are “caves” (wine cellars) and wineries all up and down the way from Macon to Lyon (about a 75 km stretch). This is Beaujolais country. We stopped at 2 wineries one small and one fairly good size. No English spoken at either place but it was fun especially at the smaller one. We had the smoothest Chardonnay (Yes, Chardonnay) we ever tasted. We thought we would visit 2 a day for the 3 days we are here. We generally buy 1-2 bottles at each stop especially since they don’t charge for tasting and the wine is so good. At 6 bottles (plus 2left over from Tuscany), we have a lot of wine to drink in less than 3 weeks!!

After the first tasting we headed to the vineyard. The vines seem stockier but not as tall as those in Tuscany. Also, the grapes are not as developed here as the growing season starts a few weeks later at this latitude and elevation. The flowers and trees are about at the stage they were at when we were in Tuscany. The grapes are just beginning to form as you can see if you look closely at the photo. All in all it’s been a delightful day and the Chardonnay we bought went well with the picnic we had at our hotel.
