Today we said “So long” to Spain and hello to Portugal. It was a lovely 4 hour drive to Porto, Portugal. We were very confused when our GPS said we had 63 kilometers to our destination and based on arrival time we would be there in 20 minutes and not on a highway either! Wayne correctly guessed that when we crossed into Portugal we moved into a new time zone. Guess it won’t be daylight at 10 pm tonight!

Well, after a little research and decided since we were so close, we would go to Porto and learn about and taste port wine. (We need to do some very serious wine drinking in the next week or make some friends to help us drink our wine!!) Wayne found a wine cellar tour and tasting. When we arrived in Porto we were surprised to find it a large, bustling city and not a sleepy port wine producing town.

Guess we should have done a little more research. Porto is the second largest city in Portugal. In 1996 it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in 2014 it was awarded Best European Destination. It is easy to see why. In addition to learning about and tasting port wine, there is much to see and do here. In our short time wandering around we saw some lovely parks and great architecture.

The port wine tour was very interesting. The grapes are grown about 100 kilometers away in Odouro River Valley and sent to Porto for crushing and processing. Different grape varieties, both red and white, are used to make white, rose and red (ruby) and tawny port wines. Of course the wine was wonderful. Peggy never new there were so many different kinds of port wines. And yes, we bought a bottle – a reserve tawny port. It will pair very nicely with Wayne’s chocolate mousse so Peggy is really hoping that one makes it home. Even though there was more traffic and people than expected, it was a wonderful day.
