Ireland, Day 5 (8 September)

Christchurch

After leaving our lovely B&B, we went straight to the Dublin airport where we exchanged our car for a decent one (a small Mazda hatchback) and picked up our daughter Beth. It took awhile to get through all the paperwork, but we finally got on the road and headed for downtown Dublin.  Following lunch, we set off for a walking tour of Dublin. Our plan was to take the three hour walk around Dublin recommended in one of travel books on Ireland, but couldn’t find the starting point, so we made up our own.

As always there was more to see than time to see it all. We will have time at the end of our trip, but this was Beth’s only chance, this trip, to see Dublin. Since it was Sunday, there were limited times when St. Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral and the Anglican Christchurch were open for visits. You guessed it, we missed the windows of opportunity for both churches. The exterior architecture was quite beautiful for both though. There was a poignant statue of a barefoot monk sleeping on a bench in  Christchurch’s courtyard.

Dublin Castle was impressive. It is on the original site of a medieval Viking Castle. The original fortress was destroyed by fire in 1684. It was rebuilt and overtime it has evolved into the beautiful castle of today. The site was the seat of British rule from 1204 to 1922. There was a lot of interesting history of Ireland under British rule and as an independent nation. The art and architecture are magnificent. Before the end of British rule, the British viceroy hosted balls and banquets in the State Apartments. Debutantes also made their debut there. The State Apartments were used as a Red Cross Hospital from 1915 – 1919. Presidents of Ireland are inaugurated and official state events are now held there. The James Connolly Room is named in honor of one of the leaders of the Irish Rebellion against Britain. The room also has information on the hospital for the wounded Irish soldiers.

Following our walking tour, we drove to Howth on the far eastern peninsula outside Dublin. The views were worth the drive.  We had a lovely dinner before making our way to our lodging at the Millhouse Farm in Rathrone, Enfield (County Meath), for the night.  Our hostess, Jennifer, was delightful and full of great tourist suggestions.
