Our first day in Canberra

Actually, it was our second day but yesterday was a total loss; so I’m not counting that. We managed to stay up until about 9 PM local time last night, but that took every ounce of energy we had. 12 hours later, we woke up to a beautiful morning about 90% recovered. After breakfast, the first order of business was to go to the bank and ensure that our account was set up and there was money in it. Well, guess what. It seems that wire transfers are anything but instantaneous. After 4 days, the bank had no clue where the money went to. The second quirk was that they wouldn’t allow me to add Peggy’s name to the account I had set up. We did set up a second account which was a joint account, but their computer system went down before everything was completed, so we’re left up in the air on both accounts.

While the banking thing was a disaster, everything else went smoothly — well, almost everything. The second order of business was to purchase cell phones so we could get connected locally. That went well. Then we got a gps to help us get around and that went well.

After shopping, our friends Bill and Deb took us to lunch at a converted convent called the Benedict Cafe. It was truly a wonderful lunch and the building and grounds are magnificent. After lunch, they took us up to Mt. Ainslie for a capital view of the Capitol. From there, we went to Red Hill on the opposite side of the Parliament for another view. The scenery is magnificent, and the weather could not have been better. A pleasant 74 degrees, low humidity, clear blue sky and a very gentle breeze. Reminds me a lot of east San Diego.

After doing a little more shopping, we returned to Bill and Deb’s for supper with their daughter Kelly and her husband Scott and their three children. It was a lot of fun remeniscing about the time the Lewis’ lived next door in McLean 25 or so years ago.

We haven’t yet mastered the photo album software, so we’ll have to wait to get the photos uploaded. I did manage to create a photo album with one photo and a sub-album, but have not been able to upload any more photos. I suspect that the photos are too large and/or we may have a bandwidth problem. We’ll work on it tomorrow. Until then,

Cheers,
Wayne & Peggy
