As we were not able to reserve tickets to the Jacobite train (the “Hogwarts” train featured in the Harry Potter movies) on-line, we got up early, checked out of our AirBNB in Dumbarton, and raced to the train station in Ft. William. We arrived in plenty of time for the train ride and were extremely fortunate to get the last tickets available for 3. Unfortunately we didn’t have enough English currency to pay for the tickets (no credit cards, no euros accepted and no tickets without pounds) but the conductor was nice enough to take what we had and hold our reservations while Beth raced to the ATM. (Beth is going to need a vacation from her vacation.) Our efforts finally paid off and we boarded the train for the 11 AM departure.
It was a lot of fun riding the stream train. Despite the rain and some fog, we did see some pretty countryside. We passed a series of locks and went over the Glenfinnian Viaduct. (Harry Potter fans will remember the spot.) There was one short stop along the way and the trip took a little over an hour to reach its destination in Mallaig. Then, there was about an hour wait while they reversed the train engine for the return trip. While we waited, we stopped at a bakery for some goodies and spent some time in gift shops looking for post cards. The train ride back was just as enjoyable as it was in the beginning and we finally arrived at the starting point about 4 PM.
From Ft. William, we headed to our next Airbnb on the outskirts of Inverness. Along the way, we drove along part of Loch Ness (but Nessie failed to make an appearancce for us). It is far larger than we imagined. Peggy said it made Lake George, in NY Adirondacks, look like a puddle. It was raining and windy which made the water quite choppy with lots of white caps. The beauty of the countryside continues to impress us. We passed numerous cars with kayaks on them. Despite the wind and rain there were many people walking away from a launching site. We even passed a few cyclists with saddle bags on their bikes. These Scots are made of stern stuff.
We decided to have dinner before heading to our lodging. That proved to be quite challenging. Apparently, September is a popular month with the Scots to be on holiday. Also, it was Saturday night and there was a big concert in town. Eventually, we had a good dinner at a local hotel and headed to our Airbnb. It’s a lovely 2 bedroom 1.5 bath Duplex on a quiet residential street. We quickly settled in and fine tuned our plan for tomorrow. Stay tuned as the adventure continues.
