Day 1 Sunday, August 23: McLean, VA – West Knoxville, TN.

Today, we finally left on our cross-country road trip. As I always say ” The first step in any plan, is to plan to change the plan.” That is exactly what we did! Originally, we were going to go north and then west across Canada to the Pacific Northwest. But because of the wild fires and smoke in Canada and Western US, we decided to take the southern route across the U.S.

As we traveled through Virginia, we were again reminded of how beautiful Virginia is. It has ocean beaches, proximity to the nation’s capital, and the Shenandoah Mountains. Within 40 minutes of leaving home we had some lovely views of rolling hills and mountains. Sadly, as we drove through southwest Virginia, we saw a lot of the invasive Kudzu covering bushes and trees along the side of the road and climbing up hillsides.

For our trip this year, we opted to take our new Prius as the Miata is beginning to show it’s age. Unfortunately, taking photos from inside the Prius is very difficult and Peggy was unable to get any good photos along the way. Also, as we are time limited for this trip, we will be focusing on visiting friends rather than camping and sight seeing as we usually do so there won’t be the usual  display of photos.

We got as far as Knoxville, TN and are packing it in for the day. Tomorrow, we’ll be heading for Little Rock, AR.

Best wishes to all,

Wayne & Peggy
