Day 3, Thursday, 16 August: Reims to Brussels

We awoke to a beautiful sunny day. Our first task of the day was to get sim cards for our cell phones that will cover most of the countries where we will be traveling. We believe our European smartphones from 2 years ago should work. The first store where we stopped didn’t sell any sim cards. After several wrong attempts at finding a store where they sell them, (the French shopkeepers really tried to help despite the language barrier), we finally found a store downtown only to be told they we would have to wait in line for an hour to purchase one. We found another store that sold sim cards but only for France with no roaming capability so we gave up and decided to wait and get them later as we wanted to do something more fun than shopping for sim cards.

Before leaving Reims, we had a very interesting tour and champagne tasting at Taittinger Cellars. They were first established in 1734 alongside a 13th century Benedictine Abbey of Saint-NIcaise where the monks made their wine. The Abbey was destroyed during the French Revolution but the wine facility, later bought by Pierre Taittenger, survived.

The cellars were made in natural caves beneath the Abbey and the deepest parts of the caves are 1800 – 2000 meters down where the ancient Romans mined blocks of chalk for building. The underground temperature stays constant year round and is perfect for aging the wine. Following that delightful interlude, we set the gps and headed for Brussels. We opted for the motorway – much like our interstates with tolls. We passed through some very pretty country side with corn fields and other unidentified crops, cows, sheep and a couple of wind farms. With the borderless EU countries, we didn’t even realize that we had crossed into Belgium until Peggy’s phone dinged reminding her of her very limited international plan. Another similarity with European motorways and our interstates is road construction leading to traffic backups. We experienced a 13 kilometer backup on our way to Brussels that held us up for about 20 minutes. That was the only hitch in or travels.

After a lovely tour of Brussels provided by our gps, we finally found the apartment of our friends around 6 PM and met with their other friends from the States. We all went out for Italian dinner and afterwards went to the Delirium Cafe (a famous Dutch bar that set a world record for the most beers served in 2004) that now serves over 3100 beers.

Later, we then headed to Brussels Central Plaza where they were having their biannual flower show. Unfortunately, it was so crowded you couldn’t get near the flower show (reminded us of Rockefeller Center at Christmas). However the buildings surrounding the Central Plaza were all lighted up for a magnificent show.

At the end, we topped off the evening with a real Belgian waffle for desert and headed home for the night.
