Day 32: The Great Alpine Road

Upon recommendations from our friends and others we met along the way we decided to drive inland to Bright which is a small town north of Bairnsdale and on the other side of the mountains. The road is called the Great Alpine Road and crosses over the Great Dividing Range which separates the interior from the coast. The road was originally a trail used by aborigines over thousands of years, and was developed into a road when gold was discovered back in the mid 19th century. It is now a very narrow, windy, two lane road that goes from Bairnsdale through Bright to Wangaretta. I thought some of the roads in New Zealand were scary, but this one was just as bad. The big difference was that this road went on for over 100 km instead of just a 10 or 20 km. Part of the time, Peggy chose to close her eyes rather than look out at the scenery. The only consolation was that the road (what there is of it) is paved the entire distance.

Along the way we stopped off at the Ensay Winery and discovered a couple of delightful wines along with a vintner who had spent considerable time in New York not far from where Peggy lived in the Catskills. Needless to say, that inspired much conversation after which we purchased a couple of bottles of cabernet-shiraz. We finally arrived in Bright in the evening and found our way to our campground in the dark. After only a couple of wrong turns, we found the campground and chose to rent a cabin instead of trying to set up our tent in the dark. We went into town and found a pizza joint for dinner and then we returned to the cabin, read our story until I finally crashed for the night.
