As we were scheduled to take the 2PM tour to Auschwitz, we got off to a lazy start, had breakfast, and set up our backpacks with snacks and drinks. As we had plenty of time we decided to walk the 2 km over to the Old Town and then another couple of km to the rendezvous point for the bus tour.
The bus arrived pretty much on time and it was an hour and a half drive to Auschwitz. The Auschwitz tour was in two parts, Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II-Birkenau, the latter being much larger than the first. We were amazed to discover that the Auschwitz concentration/death camps were actually larger than the entire town of Auschwitz (Oswiecim).
I found the day very enervating. That’s not to say I wouldn’t have taken the tour had I known in advance because I did know in advance and was fully prepared for it. But it hit me hard none-the-less. I won’t go into detail about the tour nor will I talk about what we saw as I will let the photos speak for themselves. What I will say is what a grim reminder it is of how inhumane humans can be. I never cease to wonder how a single species, homo sapiens (latin for wise man – clearly an oxymoron), can exhibit such extremes in behavior from benevolence to malevolence. When one sees such a sight it is extremely difficult to be optimistic about the future of humanity.
It is truly sad that it was the survivors of the camps that made the choice to save the remains as a reminder of what should never happen again – but unfortunately is happening as we speak.
