Day 43: Enroute to Adelaide, SA

Today was another travel day. This time we drove from Port Campbell to Strathalbyn in South Australia. It was a long drive (a little over 500 km), but the roads were good and the weather was perfect so we made good time. Just outside of Port Campbell, we stopped at the 12 Apostles, a natural coast formation of tall monoliths at the edge of the ocean and away from the cliffs. (They resemble the towering spires at Monument Valley National Park in Arizona.) These are formed by the ocean eroding the limestone cliffs and leaving the more solid parts of rock standing.

Further up the road we ran into Tower Hill Reserve which is the caldera of an extinct volcano. We drove down into the caldera which is about 5 km across, stopped at the visitor center and then hiked to the peak of one of the three scoria cones (lava deposits) formed by the most recent volcanic eruptions (about 30,000 years ago.) The view from the peak is breath taking. You can see all the way to the ocean beyond. There is a road that circles the caldera from which there are several spectacular views. (Once I get caught up with my photos, I’ll get them posted.)

We had not gone shopping, our food stores were pretty meager and dining establishments were not really appealing, so we wound up eating a very late lunch at a Subway in Kingston. They’re not that great, but they’re always reliable. In this part of the country, you can travel for long distances without finding a lot of amenities.

It was dark by the time we arrived and being tired, we chose to stay in a motel again. After searching for a time, we found a motel in the middle of town and inquired about a room. Fortunately, they had none, but suggested another motel on the edge of town. I say “fortunately” because in addition to being a motel, it was also a bar and casino. It was just the kind of place that reminded me of a stay in a joint in Fairbanks, Alaska many years ago. (That’s a long story.) As it turned out, there was one room available at the other motel which was very nice and certainly an improvement over the one we didn’t get. (Again, lady luck was with us.)

Dinner, however, was another story. We could find no suitable restaurant and the only food in our larder was tuna fish and it didn’t appeal to us. So we had a child’s dream dinner – cookies, hot cocoa and tea. At that point we were too tired to care. We read our book (and finished it) and tucked in for the night.
