Along the way, we decided to stop at Alnwick Castle. The first parts of the castle were built at the end of the 11th century and it has gone through several modifications and enlargements since. The Duke of Northumberland and his family still live there part of the year and it is the second largest, inhabited castle in England after Windsor Castle.

The castle has been used for several purposes in addition to being a residence. These include a fortress along the anglo-scottish border, a prison (there is a dungeon near the entrance to the castle that can only be accessed through a hole in the floor above), and parts are used for educational facilities. The castle presently houses an adjunct campus for the St. Cloud (Minnesota) State University.

The castle is featured in the Harry Potter movies, Downton Abbey series and movies and television productions. The exterior and parts of the interior were used as settings for the Harry Potter movies and the dining room was used for dining scenes on Downton Abbey. We walked the halls past the servants’ quarters and butler’s rooms, but since it is an active household, entry into those rooms was not permitted. Since we are staying just outside of Whitby in Sleights, we decided to have an early dinner before heading to our lodging. We had a wonderful dinner of fresh sea bass at the Star Inn down by the waterfront in downtown Whitby. At dinner, we met a young couple from about 40 minutes away and had a delightful conversation with them.

The days are getting shorter and by the time we arrived at our destination, it was dark and the houses were not numbered (and of course, the streets had no signs). After wandering around in the dark for a bit we encountered some kind people who helped us get to our lodging. We quickly settled into our room, checked email and went to bed.
