Day 72: Armidale to Denman, NSW

Another lovely day today. We started off after breakfast on a short drive-about Armidale taking photos of some of the sights we saw on the bus tour yesterday. Afterwards, we started off for Musswelbrook which lies at the head of the Hunter River Valley. We arrived in Musswelbrook about 2:30 only to find out there was no accommodations to be found anywhere in town. A little bit of research showed us a small town called Denman about 20 km away and after making a couple of calls we located a cabin for tonight and Sunday night. As it turned out, the cabin was much more pleasant and less expensive than any of the other accommodations we had considered, so we were very fortunate that all the others were filled. The caravan park is one of the neatest, best equipped and most picturesque of all the parks we have seen while in Australia.

Upon settling in, we went to scout out the town. In the center of town (which is only about 3 blocks long) there is a century plus old hotel called the Royal Hotel which is truly marvelous. We checked out the dinner menu which looked very inviting but unfortunately, dinner would not be served for another couple of hours. So we found a small cafe where they made their own chocolates and had ourselves some tea, cappuccino, cake and chocolate to tide us over until dinner. We then went across the street to the Royal Hotel for wine and a very nice dinner. After dinner, we returned to our cabin, refined our itinerary for the next ten days, read our books and tucked in for the night. Tomorrow we’ll be visiting the wineries for which the Hunter Valley is famous.
