Day 7: Coronado Island (Sunday February 15, 2015)

It was a picture perfect day here on Coronado Island. Sunny & low 80s. (Coronado Island is not really an island. It is the northern end of a 7 mile sand spit that forms the barrier between the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Harbor, connects to the mainland near the Mexican border and is connected to downtown San Diego by a very high bridge that crosses the harbor. Along the spit [called the Silver Strand] are sandy beaches on both ocean and harbor sides.) The unseasonably warm weather made for a lovely stroll along the ocean. Our hotel, El Cordova, is across the street from the Del Coronado Hotel & a block from the ocean. It is an older hotel with old world charm and rooms surrounding a courtyard with a covered restaurant, an open area for our free continental breakfast, and a pool.

We spent a relaxing day with our daughter Debbie and a young friend. Following a beach stroll, complete with dipping our toes in the Pacific Ocean (it was too cold for anything more adventurous), after which we spent the day pool side. It was unfortunate that the water was so cold because the surf was magnificent and would have been perfect for body surfing. But the heated pool and hot tub compensated for the loss. All in all, it was a wonderful day.
