Today was another wonderful day. We explored some of California’s wine country. We visited 3 wineries in Sonoma and alas only had time for one in Napa. We started out at Benziger in Glen Ellen, Sonoma. We toured it last time we were here and it still remains our favorite. The staff are very knowledgeable and they all seem to have fun at their jobs. The only problem was that there was not a wine we tasted that we didn’t like and choosing wine to purchase was quite a dilemma.

We finished our day of tasting at Grgich Hills Estate. The wine was wonderful and the beginning of the winery is a true rags to riches success story! The winery was founded by Austin Hills (Hills Brothers Coffee fortune) and Mike Grgich. Mike emigrated from Croatia in 1958 with a total of $32  and a knowledge of wine making. After the Chardonnay he crafted at Chateau Montelena outscored France’s best in the 1976 Paris Tasting, Hill partnered with Grgich and the winery was formed. The most interesting thing we learned was that the zinfandel grape (from which comes my favorite wine), which I always believed to be native to America, seems to have been introduced from a grape variety in Croatia.

We completed our beautiful day in wine country with a light dinner and are having a quiet relaxing evening in our very comfy room. We recommend El Pueblo Inn to anyone who is going to be near Sonoma Valley.
