We decided to use Tarragona as our home base to explore Barcelona. Tarragona is small city about 1 1/2 hrs from Barcelona. We have heard that driving in Barcelona is very challenging so a comfy train ride sounds like fun. But that will have to wait for tomorrow. Today we explored Tarragona. It is a small city that was settled by the Romans during the reign of Augustus. At one point it was a major city in the Roman Empire and has some interesting ruins. It is situated on the Mediterranean was some lovely beaches. There were a few folks in the water but mostly folks were just sun bathing. It has the charm of the other old cities we have visited here in Spain but is not nearly as crowded as the larger cities like Barcelona. Among its many sites includes a Roman water aqueduct sections of the wall  that surrounded the city from 3rd & 2sd centuries BC that were fortified in the 14th & 18th centuries and some gates in the city walls. The amount of the Roman amphitheatre that has been preserved is quite amazing. It was the site of gladiator competitions and is right on the Mediterranean Sea. We were also privileged to wander through the remains of a Roman Basilica and Roman Street. It was awe-inspiring to realize how long the columns and structures have been place. Balancing  out the Roman influence is the Christian influence with its many churches including Basilica Cathedral de Tarragona.

All in all it was a wonderfully relaxing day topped off with good wine, beer, pizza and a long conversation with a couple from Ireland. They go to Tarragona every year for a few days vacation. Politics has come up couple of times with people we’ve chatted with. They gently mention it to test the waters and are not Trump fans. They had an early plane and we had an early train so we said goodbye and headed to our hotels. Time to get ready for an early train ride tomorrow morning.
