The day started with a lot of overcast and the mountains hidden in the clouds. Hoping that the clouds might burn off by afternoon, we opted to go to Lake Matheson which is very close to the glacier. We took the long hike around the lake (about 4 km) and took lots of photos. We got a really good picture of the mountains (with clouds) reflected in the lake. (We also purchased a post card showing what it would have looked like on a clear calm day.) The lake is truly beautiful even in the overcast weather. It is surrounded by a rain forest with moss covered trees and all kinds of ferns. There is a particular fern called the Prince of Wales feather fern that has the featheriest leaf structure I have ever seen.
After hiking around the lake, we drove up to the glacier (or as close as we could) and hiked the rest of the way. It was about 1 ½ to 2 km to the glacier along a steep rocky path. Peggy got a chance to use her new hiking poles for the first time. She says they worked really well. According to the sign at the car park, that was where the glacier ended in 1995. (There is another sign about 1 km down the road that shows where the glacier was in 1750.) It is staggering to think that the glacier has receded twice as much in 18 years as it did the previous 225 years. But politicians assure us that global warming is just a figment of our imagination, so I guess we shouldn’t be concerned.
We left Fox Glacier about 3 pm and headed for Wanaka. On the way we saw a lookout point called Knight’s Point, so we obviously had to stop and take a look. The view of the Tasman Sea from the point was unbelievable. The sea is so blue and the tree covered hills drop straight into it.
Pushing on as we did set us a little ahead of our schedule, so now we can spend a little more time in the fiordland area . We booked a tour for Saturday morning and should have plenty of time to look around after we arrive in Te Anau which is where we’ll catch the tour.
