Day 31 , Aug 17: Sacramento, CA

We had a lazy start to the day just catching up and enjoying the lovely morning. Later, we visited the California State Railroad Museum in downtown Sacramento. It has a wonderful display about building the railroad connecting California to the east. It is mind boggling to realize the amazing building feat. The construction of the Union Pacific Railroad was built after the 1862 Pacific Railroad Act. The railroad was built heading west from Council Bluffs, IO & East from San Francisco, CA. Both sections joined May 10,1869 at Promontory Point, Utah. The majority of the workers were Irish & Chinese and all the work was done by hand including blasting through Donner Pass with blackpowder. Donner Pass is 7,057 feet in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Afterwards, we went to dinner with Candy’s parents and then finished the day watching Hidden Figures. a movie Peggy had been wanting to see for a long time. This was reminiscent of many of our get-togethers in VA which included dinner and a movie so it brought back many fond memories of the past.
