Day 8 Sunday, August 30, 2026, Deming, NM – Phoenix, AZ

As we continued along our journey today, we crossed the continental divide and our gained our final hour on this trip. (Arizona does not participate in daylight savings time.) About 5 miles from the AZ/TX border, we entered a quaint little town, Duncan. Since it was Sunday morning there was almost no one out and about, but some of the buildings and lamp posts were quite unique.

As today’s travels took us west into AZ, Peggy noticed that the corn fields in Franklin looked healthy especially compared to the corn fields in TX and NC where most of the corn stalks looked dead. The stark beauty of the surrounding landscape with its scrub bushes and imposing mountains in the distance reminded us that we are truly in the southwest. We drove along the edge of Gila National Forest and part of San Carlos Indian Reservation.

We arrived at our friends’ home where we will relax and spend the next couple of days visiting and catching up with one another.

Interesting road sign of the day – Rusty Iron Lane.

Best to all,
Wayne & Peggy
