Day 39, Aug 25: Mt. Rainier

We awoke Friday to a clear blue sky and a view from our room of Mt. Rainier behind the tall fir trees. After an amazing buffet breakfast, Amy and Wayne went on a hike along Skyline Trail that made a 5 1/2 mile circle up the mountain. It was about a 2000 foot climb to the top (just the trail, not the mountain) and by the time we got back, we were both bushed. However, the scenery was well worth it.

Mt. Adams

The whole Cascade Range lay at our feet and you could see both Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens clearly in the distance.

Mt. St. Helens

What amazed me more than anything was the retreat of Nisqually Glacier. When I was young, you could walk across the entire glacier at Paradise and now there is just a large deep canyon where the glacier once was.

What’s left of the glacier at 7000 feet.

Now there are just a few snow patches remaining at the 7000 foot level and none at Paradise – clearly a sign of global warming at work.

Paradise Inn

Peggy stayed behind exploring Paradise Inn, the visitor center and area surrounding it. There was a great ranger program about the formation of the National Park Service (Friday, August 25 was its 101st birthday!), Mt. Rainier Natl Park and the building and renovation/restoration of Paradise Inn. It is a magnificent, rustic building that was built between 1916 & 1917 using cedar pine and local rocks – all within Mt. Rainier Natl Park. Some of the lodge furniture was even made from the cedar logs. It opened in 1917 and was meant to be a model for other national parks. The renovation began after the 2005 season ended and took between 2 & 3 years.

The main focus of the renovation was to have it structurally sound while preserving the original architecture. Mission accomplished right down to the old fashioned bathroom tile, the huge fire places, exposed cedar beams and the mezzanine that surrounds the lodge and looks down on the main floor. The mezzanine and more support beams were added in 1920s (Peggy thinks that’s the correct time frame.) to help support the roof and walls from the heavy, wet winter snows. Normal snowfall is between 500 & 600 feet. The only change was the elimination of the cocktail lodge to make handicap accessible rooms on the first floor. Beer and wine is available in the dining room and snack bar. We wish we could have stayed longer, but Amy needed to get back to work and we were lucky to get the vacancy when we did! We look forward to returning on a future trip.
